I love that hologram flickering out of existance. Great touch of dark comedy, especially fun how entirely uninterested Vader is. While Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) started the ball rolling with a bang, Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) takes that explosive start and runs with that momentum in leaps and bounds. I've seen many sequels over the years, Terminator 2, Aliens, RoboCop2, Shrek 2, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings (bare with me on those two since I know they're book series) etc. and yet none of them seem to hit the beats of the development of the characters and plot alongside the action so perfectly balanced. I don't know, my review may seem a little ramble like but it's just one of my all time favorite movies and I'm kind of at a loss of words for how to talk about it professionally.

I love this scene. I like the way Vader says NO captain, they're alive! I love the way Palpatine says boy. Seeing somebody who genuinely doesn't know what's coming in this film is good times! Episodes 1, 2 and 3 will definitely give you the explanation you're looking for. In opposition to Return of the Jedi, The Empire Strikes Back usually gets the nod as being the favorite installment. This becomes increasingly interesting as one looks more closely at the film. Starting and ending seemingly in mid-sentence, with the characters separated and following different plot lines, Empire has more in common with Ulysses than the standard Hollywood blockbuster. Rather than following in the footsteps of the first film and depicting a sunny, neatly sewn up story with the requisite happy ending, this film descends into darkness and despair. Throughout the film the protagonists are chased across the galaxy, they generally lose every conflict they enter into, are variously dismembered, double-crossed, shot at, swallowed whole, traumatized, dropped from great heights and frozen in carbonite. The Romantic tradition would demand that the bad guys pay dearly for these various insults, but astoundingly the bad guys actually seem to win. In light of the success of this film, it seems that no one minded.

12:14 : Captain Needa wasn't dead. You can hear him gasp with breath right at the end, meaning Vader released the grip while he was still alive. But yeah. Vader's way of forgiving someone is to choke them into unconsciousness rather than death, and then tell them they're lucky to be alive with a one-liner. I don't know why people had a problem with Vader cracking a pun while force-choking someone in Rogue One.
